Iowa bomb squad disposes explosive device in car

MARION, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in eastern Iowa say a bomb squad has disposed of an explosive device found in a vehicle driven by a man facing assault and reckless driving charges.

Marion police say 29-year-old Dustin Whitford, of Hiawatha, led officers on a car chase Wednesday as they attempted to pull him over on suspicion of assault with a weapon.

He is accused of fleeing on foot after driving through a yard in nearby Cedar Rapids. He was later located.

Officers inspected the car Whitford was driving and found a homemade explosive device described as a taped cardboard tube with a fuse. They also found items associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Whitford faces several charges, including eluding and drug possession. Court records do not list an attorney.
