Drowning Prevention: How to Stay Safe While Swimming

MASON CITY, IA – Anyone going into the water this summer is being asked to stay safe.

Governor terry Branstad has recognized this week as “drowning prevention week”.

The goal is to help educate people about safe swimming.

Wear a life jacket when boating.

Supervise small children and know CPR.

Experts also recommend not holding your breath underwater for long periods of time, avoiding alcohol use and take swimming lessons.

“You need to take swimming lessons even at a small age. We have swimming lessons here all the way from 3 months all the way to adult seniors so it’s very important that you get your child into some swimming lessons, so they can save themselves,” says YMCA lifeguard Jaque Petersen.

To schedule swimming lesson, contact your local YMCA.
