Xcel Energy crews on long shifts to restore power

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Xcel Energy crews are working to restore power to the hundreds of thousands of customers who lost electricity over the weekend.

The Minneapolis-based utility says about 89,000 customers remained without power as of early Sunday evening.

More than 550,000 Xcel Energy customers in Minnesota and western Wisconsin lost power at various points during severe thunderstorms from Friday to early Saturday.

Utility executives say 1,000 line workers are working to restore service. Xcel says it expects to restore power to the vast majority of its customers by Wednesday.

The utility says it gives top priority to situations that threaten public safety, such as downed wires. The next priority includes hospitals and nursing homes. Then crews focus on densely populated areas.
