ORLEANS, Iowa (AP) — Officials say Big Spirit Lake in northern Iowa is safe for swimming again following the discharge of untreated wastewater.
The state Department of Natural Resources says water samples taken Thursday at the Orleans Beach area show levels of E. coli bacteria had rapidly dropped.
More than 20,000 gallons of untreated wastewater were accidentally discharged Wednesday at the southeast corner of Big Spirit Lake.
The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District inspected an overflowing manhole, and state officials determined a pipeline below the manhole had collapsed. Officials have stopped the discharge and fixed the problem.
