MASON CITY, IA - Residents of Mason City say, Saturday’s Cannonball Days is sure to have something for everyone.
Coordinators say the main focus of this years event is encouraging local kids to be active and have fun at the same time.
“It gives them a chance to get out and exercise and get a little feeling of what it’s like running. One of the things so different about this is that everybody is a winner. Everybody gets a big medal, they get a t-shirt, some treats and it’s a fun event,” said Dennis Wilson, Co-Chairman with Friends of 457.
More than 150 area youth participated in one of today’s activities, “The Kids Fun Run”.
For many local parents, they say it’s a great opportunity to help kids learn the importance of staying in shape.
“My wife is a big runner so she kind of got them into it and they love running. They did a good job and yeah, it’s always key to keep them healthy,” said Andy Evans of Mason City.
Brenda Crom of Mason City couldn’t agree more.
“I think it’s a good idea opportunity for the kids to start out with healthy ways of living. Get out and exercise when their young. Maybe it’s something that will be instilled in their lives,” said Crom.
Don’t get me wrong, parents are having their fun too.
The car show followed by the barbecue cook out put everyone in the mood for a good time, even though the day belongs to the River City’s youngest residents.
“Bringing the community together. I think it’s a good way for the kids to do things with their friends. Get involved with their friends. It makes it more fun,” said Crom.
Event coordinators say that while it’s great to see kids take part in active social events, it’s the grown ups responsibility to find ways to motivate them at home.
Their biggest concern is having kids look forward to one event all year as opposed to making healthy choices on a daily basis.
