Extremely hot conditions continued to spread over the West on Saturday as a strong ridge of high pressure built over the region. The system stretched northward and pushed hot air from the Desert Southwest into the Great Basin and across California. Excessive heat warnings have been issued across most of Arizona, Nevada, and Carolina. Hot air with dry surface conditions maintained high fire danger across most of the Western states. Mid-day high temperatures reached well into the triple digits for many areas across southern California and Arizona. Palm Springs, California saw a mid-day high at 115 degrees, while Phoenix, Arizona saw a mid-day high of 114 degrees. Record breaking temperatures were likely for much of the Southwest on Saturday. Due to warm temperatures and some limited moisture, some showers and thunderstorms popped up across the Central and Southern Rocky Mountains. These storms have not turned severe, but kept fire danger a high concern for Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.

In the East, a low pressure system spinning over the Great Lakes and Ohio River Valley allowed for more showers and thunderstorms to develop from the Midwest through the Northeast. The system also created a cold front that stretched from the Northeast, down the Eastern Seaboard, and into the Southeastern states. Some of these storms turned severe with strong winds and periods of heavy rainfall across the Gulf of Mexico.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday have ranged from a morning low of 41 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif. to a midday high of 116 degrees at El Centro, Calif.
