Iowa church damaged by tornado still holds service

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — A Muscatine congregation whose church was damaged by a tornado has held its service under a large canvass tent.

An estimated 1,300 people gathered Sunday in the parking lot of the Calvary Church. The church is closed after its auditorium roof was blown off by a tornado on June 24.

The Muscatine Journal reports ( ) the service included a tribute to a man killed in a nearby auto shop that was severely damaged by the tornado. The family of the man received applause from the audience.

Rev. Ty Thomas says the gathering was proof that the heart of a church is not the physical building but the people.
