CLEAR LAKE, IA – Clear Lake is kicking off this year’s festive Independence Day weekend with a “Home Town Hero” themed celebration.

The 4th of July parade showcases everything from classic cars to zombies and many floats pay tribute to veterans and members of the armed forces.

For the Goranson family, the 4th of July is a holiday that is bigger than Christmas. Marching around to the tune of patriotic songs, the Goranson Lovell Family Kazoo Band is a home town hero for the entertainment they give the crowd while they are waiting for the parade to start.

“We love to do it because the people who sit here wait a whole half hour after ten o’clock for the parade to get here and it’s just on its way up, and we love Clear Lake and the 4th of July is the biggest holiday ever in our family and we’re all here,” Steve Goranson said.

It all started when Steve and his wife got married. They gave out kazoos instead of hiring an orchestra at their wedding and once everything was said and done, they were left with “50 kazoos and nothing to do.”

Thousands showed up to watch the annual ceremony on Thursday and the Goranson’s took their place on the parade route.

“Nineteen years ago, the charter members of the kazoo family band went out and it was mostly kids and me and we’ve been doing it almost every years.”

While today is all about communities across the country honoring their freedom and the stars and stripes, the Goranson Lovell Family Kazoo Band is also proving that this is a holiday that is also very focused on family.
