Iowa zoo to host global conservation conference

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines zoo is slated to host an international conference focused on wildlife conservation.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/1aJqZXE ) that Blank Park Zoo will attract animal experts from around the world next week. The conference will feature 50 international presentations, on the heels of the zoo’s own conservation lecture series.

Presentations will cover a variety of topics, from the ranging patterns of elephants to the effort to save chimpanzees in Rwanda’s Gishwati forest. A former researcher at Iowa’s Great Ape Trust will discuss the use of unmanned aircraft for conservation.

The global conference is aimed at zoo and aquarium workers and nonprofit representatives, but is open to the public. It’s typically held in much larger metropolitan areas, such as Houston and Seattle.
