MASON CITY, IA – Jim Ewalt wasn’t expecting this when he opened up his front door.

“Well it’s shocking because I really didn’t expect this I know there is a lot of people who do a lot of things in the community I just really didn’t expect it, it’s a great award,” said Ewalt.

Jim is known around the area for his work with Iowa Operation Lifesaver, a program that promotes railroad safety.

He also volunteers with the National Night Out program, a yearly event he works on with the Mason City Police Department.

Jim says his volunteer work is what he loves to do and that’s why he’s receiving this month’s giving your best award.

“Its something that you got to enjoy when it becomes a job than its time to probably look for something else but I really enjoy working with people and if I can help them as far as safety goes why that’s the important thing to me,” said Ewalt.

And that’s why his next door neighbor Dan Mumby nominated him.

“Jim is my neighbor, been my neighbor for many, many years. He’s there when I need him and that’s important,” said Mumby.

Dan says people should look to Jim, and follows his example when it comes to giving back.

“Just is tireless. He’s tireless for the area Neighborhood Watch and all his railroad safety. He’s right there to help the people and he’s definitely a plus to this community,” said Mumby.

“Without volunteerism why we would be sunk. I mean volunteerism is just wonderful it’s needed all over and every organization needs to have some good volunteers,” said Ewalt.
