Des Moines police identify slain robbery suspect

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police have identified a man who was killed by officers after a violent home-invasion robbery.

Police said 57-year-old Larry Hawkins of Des Moines was shot and killed by police early Friday after he refused to relinquish his gun and pointed it at officers. Hawkins and another man, 52-year-old Michael Eugene Walker, are suspected of breaking into a home and threatening the occupants with guns.

Walker was taken into custody unharmed. He is charged with first-degree burglary, assault causing injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Theodore Stroope, a nine-year department veteran, and Jacob Hedlund, a six-year veteran. The officers will be placed on paid administrative leave until an investigation is complete.
