Junior pitcher Stone Sturges struck out 13 batters, helping Mason City edge top-ranked Newman 2-1 in 10 innings.
However, Sturges didn’t put on the only great pitching performance. Newman’s Casey Hall was also excellent, giving up just four hits in nine innings.
After the game, Mason City coach Troy Rood said it was the best dual-pitching performance in the River City rivalry game that he can ever remember.
As for Sturges, he threw 138 pitches in nine innings of work and also turned the game-ending double play at short stop.
The Mohawks broke the 1-1 tie in the 10th inning after Adam Douglas was walked with the bases loaded.
