Police: Burglary suspect was shot multiple times

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say a home invasion suspect killed by officers during the July Fourth weekend was shot multiple times.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/1a6xL6Q ) 57-year-old Larry Hawkins died of multiple gunshot wounds early Friday morning.

Hawkins and another man, 52-year-old Michael Eugene Walker, are suspected of breaking into a home, beating the occupants and threatening them with guns. Police say Hawkins refused to relinquish his weapon and pointed it at officers. Hawkins did not fire any shots at police.

Walker was taken into custody unharmed. He is charged with first-degree burglary, assault causing injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave until an investigation is complete.
