MASON CITY, IA – Authorities in Mason City find explosives and other items while investigating a reported assault.
Mason City Police arrested and charged Mark O’Gorman with several charges related to assault and possession of weapons and drugs with intent to sell.
Police say its normal protocol to investigate the property where an alleged assault on a woman took place but they weren’t ready for what they saw.
“After police talked to her, they got a search warrant for the residence. The SOG team was called in because of the possible threat of a fire arm. Once they got in there and cleared the residents they also found a marijuana grow operation and some explosive devices,” said Captain Mike McKelvey with the Mason City Police Department.
With those discoveries, police know they have to play it safe.
“We try to train the officers when the come across certain things, that the light bulb goes off and they need to stop slow down and back out. Then call in the fire marshals office just because they have more experience and training in rendering that stuff safe,” said McKelvey.
Meanwhile neighbors in the area say they’re glad to see something done about a home they say has caused issues in the past.
“Nothing surprises me over here. When I got up around two, I actually thought maybe the SWAT team was out here. Whatever, it wouldn’t surprise me,” said one neighbor only identified as Gene of Mason City.
for neighbors like gene, the news isn’t a surprise, especially when it comes to the nature of the crime.
“I don’t know the guy that well, you know he’s been here forever and just kind of keeps to himself. I mind my business but nothing surprises me,” said Gene.
O’Gorman is being held at the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and is facing more than eight charges, two of them felonies.
Meanwhile, Fire Marshals say the explosives they found were not extremely dangerous but there was concern about them because they were being handled by an amateur.
Mark O’Gorman is charged with:
-Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (Felony)
-Possession of Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver (Felony)
-2 counts of Possession of Incendiary Device (Aggravated Misdemeanor)
-False Imprisonment (Serious Misdemeanor)
-Serious Assault (Serious Misdemeanor)
-Possession of Controlled Substance (Serious Misdemeanor)
-Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Simple Misdemeanor)
