MASON CITY, IA – Iowa State Representative Tyler Olson is making it official by announcing his candidacy for the governor’s race today.

The 37 year-old makes his announcement in Mason City’s Public Library surrounded by family, friends, supporters and other local politicians before making his announcement earlier in his home of Cedar Rapids.

Olson is currently serving his fourth term in the Iowa House and says it’s his experience of working for a fourth generation small family business that will give him the edge.

“We need somebody with a perspective that will help us begin the next 30 years. I work at a family small business, I’m the fourth generation in a very rapidly changing industry. For us to be successful as a business, we need to understand where the world is headed and where the market is headed and bring those ideas to work,” said Olson.

Today the Campaign Communications Director for Governor Branstad issued a statement in response to the announcement and it says in part:

“Olson’s brand of partisan politics couldn’t be farther from Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds’ record of reaching across the aisle to pass laws that move Iowa forward,” said Jimmy Centers.

Governor Branstad has yet to make his announcement official but according to reports he’s already organized his campaign team for re-election.

“With fresh leadership and a fresh perspective we’ll be able to really grow going into the future. I work in an industry that’s rapidly changing and I want to bring that experience to the experience of leading the state. Really seeing a lot more innovation and workforce development going forward,” said Olson.
