Stocks rise in early trading

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are rising in early trading on Wall Street led by materials and industrial companies.

Alcoa was up 6 cents, or 0.9 percent, at $8 shortly after the U.S. stock market opened Tuesday.

The aluminum maker reported second-quarter earnings late Monday that beat analysts’ expectations. It was the first major company to announce results. The company, considered a bellwether for the economy, benefited from strong demand for aluminum used in autos and airplanes.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 69 points, or 0.5 percent, to 15,294. The Standard & Poor’s index climbed nine points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,649. The Nasdaq composite gained 12 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,497.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged at 2.64 percent.
