Des Moines police say detective shoots man

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police say a detective shot a man after intervening in an apparent assault.

Sgt. Jason Halifax says Detective Yanira Scarlett was driving Thursday morning when she noticed a man and woman fighting inside a car.

Scarlett, who was in plain clothes, turned around and stopped, then approached the woman.

A man in the car, identified as 37-year-old Tyjuan Tucker, broke the rear window and climbed out.

Halifax says he approached Scarlett, ignoring her commands that he drop to the ground. After throwing a punch that missed, Scarlett fired one shot that hit Tucker in the torso.

He was hospitalized with apparent non-life threatening injuries.

Police say he will be charged with domestic assault and two counts of assault to a police officer when he’s released from the hospital.
