Des Moines shelter dealing with influx of animals

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Des Moines-based Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking help dealing with an influx of pets.

The organization says in a news release Thursday that dozens of animals have been coming daily, and on Monday another 40 cats removed from a Des Moines home arrived. The group is caring for a total of more than 1,200 animals.

Executive Director Tom Colvin says the group is arranging a record number of pet adoptions and reuniting animals with owners, but it still needs the public’s help.

The group is asking people to reconsider before dropping off a pet at the Animal Rescue League. It notes that there are options for free spay and neuter services and free pet food.

The group also is seeking volunteers to foster pets.
