DNR says tire fire didn’t cause runoff into creek

MONTROSE, Iowa (AP) — The Department of Natural Resources says a fire that burned an estimated 1,000 tires in southeast Iowa doesn’t appear to have caused any contaminated runoff into a nearby creek.

DNR environmental specialist Terry Jones says Thursday the runoff was limited by the location of the tire pile on a low spot, atop sand at the junkyard near Montrose.

Jones says he checked Sugar Creek near the fire and didn’t find any problems.

It took firefighters from three departments more than four hours to control the fire, which broke out early Monday.

About 1,000 tires on rims burned at the former Horner junkyard southwest of Montrose.
