MASON CITY, IA – The Mason City Police Department has seen a decrease in violent crimes in the area.

The city has been murder free for a year as of Monday, July 10th and while officials don’t want to jinx that statistic, they were pleased to report that they had seen a decline over the last couple of months.

Captain McKelvey from the Mason City Police Department mentioned that while violent crimes have not been as common recently, the police department is still seeing issues in the area.

“Overall, most of the stuff reported over the last few months seems to be more property type crime, thefts. Right now one of the biggest problems we have right now is bicycle thefts,” McKelvey said.

Along with property crimes and thefts McKelvey said they have also seen an increase in questionable emails and Facebook messages, and while these crimes aren’t considered violent, they can still be harmful.
