Police note KKK fliers in Davis, Wapello counties

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in Davis and Wapello counties are investigating fliers promoting the Ku Klux Klan.

The Ottumwa Courier reports (http://bit.ly/10Pjvwv ) police found numerous fliers outside homes and businesses Thursday morning in Agency and Eldon in Wapello County and in the Davis County city of Bloomfield.

The fliers were in plastic bags weighted with rocks. Authorities say they may be been thrown from a vehicle.

The fliers refer to the “Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan” and list a 24-hour “klanline.”

Wapello County Sheriff Mark Miller says many people find the fliers offensive, but they contain protected speech. He says someone distributing the items could possibly be charged with littering.

Similar fliers were previously distributed in Van Buren County.

The KKK is a secretive group that typically asserts white supremacy.
