MASON CITY, IA – Local health officials are using some new technology to help people in our area make smarter, healthier choices when it comes to eating at their favorite restaurants.
And it’s all through and smart phone app.
The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is making it their goal to help folks have all the information they need in one spot.
Users can browse though some 100 local restaurants ranked on a healthy dining score.
Scores are based on the Nutrition Environment Measures Survey on a numbered scale up to 36 points. The higher the number, the better.
They also have direct links to the restaurants nutritional information and list their healthiest meal choices.
Health Department officials say there are many ways for those restaurants to boost their scores.
Health Promotion Manager, Kelli Huinker said, “Obviously having healthier menu options available – low-cal low-fat smart dining options, you get points for, so lots of ranges of scores out there. We don’t want to discourage anyone from going to one place or another because there are smart and healthy dining options at every restaurant, we just want to make it easier for resident to pick those out.”
That app is free to download on Apple and Android devices as well as tablets.
