Waterloo bakery closing after more than 60 years

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A bakery that became a fixture in Waterloo over the past six decades is closing.

Sharon King says she and her brother, Dennis Johnson, have decided to close Johnson’s Bakery on Sunday.

It will mark the end of a business started by their parents, Herb and Marie Johnson, in 1950 as the Dixie Cream Doughnut Shop. The business has been operating at its current location since 1957.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/12J9kXO ) lines were out the door of the business Friday morning after word spread about its impending closure.

Sharon King says business was good, but she and her brother decided now was a good time to stop. King notes that she’s nearly 70 and her brother is 66.

King says, “We’re at that age.”
