Iowa National Guard unit returns from Afghanistan

JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) — A Johnston-based Iowa Army National Guard unit is returning home from Afghanistan and a homecoming ceremony has been organized to greet them.

Sixty soldiers from Headquarters Company, 1034th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion have been gone since August 2012 when they left for training in Texas before departing for Afghanistan.

They are returning Saturday and the public is invited to a welcome home ceremony at 1 p.m. at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

The unit’s mission is to coordinate transportation, maintenance, water purification and distribution, fuel distribution, and other missions as assigned.

The unit also was mobilized in June 2006 to Iraq and returned in July 2007.
