Doc suspected in Omaha killings due in Ill. court

JONESBORO, Ill. (AP) — A doctor suspected in four slayings in Nebraska is scheduled for another southern Illinois court appearance that could decide how quickly he’ll return to Omaha to face murder charges.

Anthony Garcia, of Terre Haute, Ind., is set for a court hearing Wednesday morning in Union County, where he was arrested Monday during a traffic stop.

Garcia’s brief court appearance Tuesday in Jonesboro, Ill., was deferred so he could consult with an attorney.

The 40-year-old doctor is being held without bond on suspicion of involvement in the killings of three adults and an 11-year-old boy in Nebraska. All four victims had ties to an Omaha university medical school from which Garcia was fired in 2001.

Authorities say that when arrested, Garcia appeared to be intoxicated and had a .45-caliber handgun.
