Editor emeritus of The Fort Dodge Messenger dies

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Walter B. Stevens, the editor emeritus of The Fort Dodge Messenger in northern Iowa who wrote for the newspaper well into retirement, has died. He was 96.

Stevens’ son, Paul, says his father died Wednesday morning at the Friendship Haven retirement home in Fort Dodge.

Stevens was an Army captain during World War II. After a string of newspaper jobs he became editor of The Messenger in 1954. He became editor emeritus after his retirement in 1988, but he continued to write a weekly column about Fort Dodge life. He wrote more than 1,000 columns by 2005.

A visitation will be held Friday afternoon at Friendship Haven. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at Corpus Christi Church, and a burial will be held at Corpus Christi Cemetery.
