Stabbing Homicide Victim Confirmed

UPDATE: Police have confirmed the identity of the victim in a stabbing incident last night in Mason City.

The Mason City Police Department is investigating the death of  73-year-old Anastasios “Tom” Barlas Sr.

At around 8:45 PM on Thursday, officers responded to the residence at 2921 1st Street SW where Barlas was found deceased.

Thomas G. Barlas Jr. was taken into custody and is now being charged with 1st Degree murder.

42-year-old Thomas Barlas, Jr.  is the son of Kathryn and Thomas Barlas, Sr.

Police also tell us the incident took place at the home belonging to Kathryn and Thomas Barlas.

UPDATE: Police confirmed to a KIMT News 3 reporter on the scene that this incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

Neighbors have confirmed the address to KIMT News 3, and according to Cerro Gordo County property records, the home belongs to Kathryn and Thomas Barlas.

MASON CITY, IA – Mason City police and other first responders are on the scene of a reported stabbing on the 2900 block of 1st Street Southwest.  According to KIMT News 3 reporter Emily Boster, a subject was apprehended by police near the intersection of Taft and 1st Street Southwest shortly after 9 p.m.
