Landmark white poodle taken down in Mason City

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — The familiar white poodle, outlined by light bulbs, will shine no more above what used to be the Poodle Club in Mason City.

The Mason City Globe Gazette says (http://bit.ly/12NQyT3) the sign welcomed patrons to the nightclub for decades. Ted Savas’ parents established the club in 1964, and he says the sign’s removal signals “the end of an era.”

The club was bought by Candy Ockerman in 1989, and in 2005 she remodeled it. Ockerman changed the club name to The Candy Bar but retained the sign. Until Thursday, when the poodle came down.

It’s been sold to Mason City dentist Jay Lala. He says he plans to have it restored and placed elsewhere in town.
