MASON CITY, IA – A summer workshop is helping Mason City teens become financially literate and prepping them for life post-high school.

North Iowa Youth for Christ and the Mason City Youth Task Force are teaming up for the Lifeworks program.

It’s a 6 week session that matches up more than 20 students with volunteer coaches to shadow on their jobs.

They’ll learn everything from being on time, balancing finances, earning a paycheck, to social media responsibility.

Program organizers say it’s something teens need to be prepared for.

Ministry Director, Nick Kmoch said, “When I graduated high school I didn’t know much about anything. I mean, I got that first paycheck and I just stared at that thing and I had no idea what those numbers meant, so giving them that real world experience and showing them, this is what it looks like to work a job this is what’s expected of you. Alongside the workshops that we do that teaches kids how to manage debt.”

This is the programs first year and organizers are hoping to expand to take on more students in the future.

The students graduate from the program August 9th.
