Update: Authorities have now released the name of the victim in Sunday’s shooting. They say 25-year-old Dustin Kiefer is currently at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. The hospital says he’s in serious condition.
WESLEY, IA – A suspect is under arrest and a victim remains hospitalized after a shooting early this morning in Wesley.
According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was made shortly after 4 a.m. The caller told authorities a shooting had just happened at 309 East Street in Wesley.
An adult male was taken to the Kossuth Regional Health Center, and is still hospitalized. His medical condition is not being disclosed yet.
As authorities investigated, they identified Andrew Zeitler, 25, of Wesley, as a likely suspect. A search began and he was located in Corwith just after 7 a.m. Authorities say when he was found, Zeitler ran from law enforcement and was later spotted by an Iowa State Patrol Helicopter. He was arrested on charges of Attempted Murder and Going Armed with Intent.
Darrell Robinson made the call to authorities around 4 am.
In his 40 years living here, he says he has never heard of such violence especially this close to home.
“I woke up around 4 am, I heard voices. Thought I did and wasn’t sure; thought I was dreaming. Then the next thing I heard was gun shots. I heard five shots all together,” said Robinson.
Authorities say the victim was struck at least once.
When they arrived on the scene, it was a matter of taking care of two emergencies, getting help for the injured man, and securing the neighborhood as soon as possible.
“We attempt to make the scene safe as quickly as possible. We do that by calling out all the deputies and reserves that we have available,” said Kossuth County Sheriff, Steve Kollasch.
The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Algona Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Britt Police Department, Kanawha Police Department, and Kossuth County SRT Team assisted in the investigation.
