Lawsuit Filed in Mercy Air Med Crash

MASON CITY, IA – Court records confirm that the family of Shell Lair-Lagenbau is filing a lawsuit against Med Trans Corporation, the company that operates the helicopter service involved in the Mercy Air Med crash in January. It is a Texas based company. Lair-Lagenbau was one of three killed in that crash. Paramedic Russ Piehl and the pilot Gene Grell were also killed. The group left from Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, on their way to a call in Emmetsburg, and their medical helicopter crashed during the call. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed in Cerro Gordo County District court on Monday. The family is demanding a jury trial. We’ve reported in the past that in the preliminary NTSB report, investigators were looking very closely at weather conditions and how they may have played a part in the crash.
