DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Court of Appeals has denied the appeal of a former Garner man serving a life sentence for murder.
Leroy Seiler, 50, was convicted of first degree murder in the 1982 death of 65-year-old Willmer Gilles. Seiler is currently in the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility.
Seiler’s appeal centered on his claim that his sentence is illegal. Seiler was sentenced to life, but was also given credit for 134 days he served in jail before sentencing. The appeals court sided with a lower court ruling against Seiler, saying the 134 days would apply if his sentence were ever changed to a specific time period.
