Foundation donates money for sailor’s home

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — A foundation is donating $200,000 toward construction of a “smart home” for a disabled Cedar Falls sailor.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/17C0dvS ) that the Columbia, Mo.-based group Veterans United announced the donation Tuesday at a news conference organized by backers of an Aug. 3 benefit concert for sailor Taylor Morris.

Morris was a Navy explosives ordnance disposal expert who lost parts of all four limbs in a 2011 explosion in Afghanistan.

The donation and money raised at the concert will go toward an iPad-controlled home that will accommodate Morris’ disabilities.

Actor Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band will play at the concert. Sinise is known for his role as Lt. Dan in the movie Forrest Gump.
