DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines police officer has been transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., with injuries he suffered earlier this month.
Police spokesman Sgt. Jason Halifax says Wednesday that Lt. Joe Gonzalez’s condition worsened and he was transferred to the Minnesota hospital.
Gonzalez, a 38 year veteran of the department, was working July 13 in an off-duty capacity at the World Food Prize building in downtown Des Moines.
Gonzalez was providing uniformed security outside the building when the rear of a truck leaving the site pinned him against a wall.
The driver stopped and backed up, freeing Gonzalez, but he suffered two collapsed lungs and 13 broken ribs.
A fund was established at the Des Moines Police Officer’s Credit Union to help pay for the Gonzalez family’s travel expenses.
