State barred from moving Sioux City speed cameras

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Woodbury County District Court judge has told the Iowa Department of Transportation to keep its workers’ hands off two speed cameras set up by Sioux City along Interstate 29.

A hearing on the issue has not been scheduled.

The Sioux City Journal ( says the department sent the city a letter on July 17 asking for the cameras to be moved, saying they were an obstacle in the construction zone.

City Attorney Nicole Jensen-Harris says the city has jurisdiction to place the cameras along the roadway in Sioux City.

The cameras are installed on trailers that can be moved along the freeway. The devices check the speed of every vehicle driving by and snap photos of speeders.

The city also operates red-light cameras at 11 intersections.
