Woman gets new trial in discrimination lawsuit

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Court of Appeals says a Nigerian immigrant who alleged racial discrimination after she was fired from a West Des Moines department store in 2009 should get a new trial.

The appeals court says a district court judge should have allowed Idorenyin Salami to call witnesses that would have testified about other complaints of racism against the Von Maur store manager who fired her.

The manager was allowed to testify about her positive relationships with other people who were not white and to introduce photographs to support her claims of no bias.

The court says Salami should have been allowed to respond with evidence contradicting the manager’s testimony and that denying her that opportunity was sufficiently prejudicial to warrant a new trial.
