Inquiry in Iowa Lottery mystery touches Canada

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Investigators looking into a multimillion-dollar Iowa Lottery jackpot mystery have been in contact with Canadian authorities and are actively looking into people who may have been involved.

Special Agent in Charge Patrick Townsend of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation confirmed Thursday that his agency sought assistance from Canadian law enforcement early on during the 18-month investigation into a withdrawn claim for a $14.3 million Hot Lotto jackpot.

He says the investigation has recently taken a positive turn, and — quote — “We have people of interest that we are working on and looking into.”

The case started after a New York lawyer turned in the winning ticket in January 2012 but withdrew his claim after refusing to identify who had purchased and possessed it, walking away from millions.
