Police dog Raji patrolling streets of Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — A new police dog in patrolling the streets of Marshalltown.

The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports (http://bit.ly/18CgoKK ) Raji has joined the police department. The 1½ -year-old is a German shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix from Slovakia.

The department bought the dog after another police dog, Creasy, died in late 2012. The city’s other police dog has health problems and will retire later this year.

Police Chief Mike Tupper says buying and training dogs isn’t cheap. The department has spent about $20,000 on Raji, who graduated with handler Eric Siemens from a rigorous three-month training program in St. Paul, Minn., last month.

Marshalltown has held fundraisers to pay for its police dog program and continues to accept donations for future expenses.
