MASON CITY, IA – Aaron Harris, convicted of killing Sarah Winters last July, was in court earlier this morning to learn his sentencing.

Honorable Judge, Rustin Davenport, sentenced Harris to life in prison without parole.

Before Harris received his sentencing, letters were read to Harris on behalf of Winters’ family.

Chad Ovitt, a relative of Winters, took the witness stand and read a letter written by Winter’s daughter. She wrote, “I hope that her murder makes you drown in your guilt and sorrows and I hope you have restless nights because you are a heartless monster.

In another letter, read by Ann Sebastian, Winters’ father wrote to Harris saying, “You are facing a prison sentence for a very, very long time. You may believe that someday that you paid your debt to society. Mr. Harris, you may never pay your debt to me, my family, or your creator without some form of restitution.”

On Thursday evening, the defendant motioned for a new trial and this motion was denied by the judge this morning.

While the verdict stands as life in prison without chance for parole, Harris does have the right and the opportunity to appeal his sentencing within 30 days.
