Des Moines man gets 10 years for brother’s death

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines man has been sentenced to prison for the death of his brother in a boating accident on the Des Moines River.

KCCI-TV reports (http://bit.ly/13Lz9dA) Polk County Judge Glenn Pille sentenced 46-year-old Tony Starrett to 10 years on charges of involuntary manslaughter, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent person.

Starrett’s brother, 49-year-old Kelly Starrett, of West Des Moines, died June 17, 2012, when two boats collided in a river channel upstream from Birdland Marina on Des Moines’ north side.

Two people from each boat were thrown into the water.

Authorities say Tony Starrett’s blood alcohol level was 0.172, more than double the legal limit for operating a boat in Iowa.

Starrett apologized to his family, saying he “never intended this to happen.”
