Dubuque drivers can now pay parking with cellphone

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A new parking system in downtown Dubuque will let motorists feed meters through their cellphones.

KWWL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/15YYCzc ) that the new payment method went into effect on Monday. The city worked with a company that lets drivers set up accounts linked to their credit card through a phone number or application.

Dubuque parking division manager Tim Horsfield says the system will send text messages 15 minutes to participating motorists 15 minutes before their meters are set to expire.

Hosfield says the city gives about 36,000 parking tickets per year, and he hopes the new payment option will help lower that number.
