Police: Iowa man put dog shock collar on boy

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (AP) — A central Iowa man has been accused of disciplining his 12-year-old son with a dog shock collar.

An affidavit by Knoxville police says 35-year-old Daniel Hardwick put the shock collar on his son’s neck to motivate him to do chores. He’s also accused of putting the child in a high chair by a street curb with a sign that said the boy refused to eat his “big boy food.”

Knoxville Police Chief Daniel Losada says Hardwick was arrested Thursday after the state Department of Human Services contacted authorities. The department says it’s not commenting on the investigation.

Hardwick has been charged with neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. Records show he was released from jail Monday after posting bond.

His attorney did not immediately return a message Monday.
