Work finally begins on Davenport Ferris wheel

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Work has finally been started on the base for a Ferris wheel outside Davenport’s baseball stadium.

The Quad City-Times reports ( ) the River Bandits baseball team and city of Davenport had hoped to have the Ferris wheel in operation earlier this summer, but those plans weren’t possible due to a wet spring and repeated flooding by the Mississippi River.

Now that the ground has dried out, crews have started compacting the ground where the base will be located.

Workers then will drive in pilings and pour concrete for the base.

Davenport Public Works director Mike Clarke says the goal is to have the Ferris wheel working by first pitch next year.

The 90-foot-tall attraction will be behind left field.

The single A River Bandits are affiliated with the Houston Astros.
