Hundreds celebrate onset of Minn. gay marriage law

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hundreds of gay couples and others are celebrating in Minneapolis with gay weddings about to kick off in the state.

Minnesotans United hosted a party Wednesday night at a cafe across the Mississippi River from downtown Minneapolis. Many in the crowd planned to head to city hall for marriage ceremonies that will start at the stroke of midnight. Midnight weddings are also happening at Como Park in St. Paul, at Mall of America, in a number of courthouses around the state and at other locations, with many more to follow during the day on Thursday and in the coming days.

The riverfront event is to celebrate the many gay couples who were previously married in other states. Those couples will automatically be married when the law takes effect.
