Officials try to remove algae from Des Moines pond

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials are still trying to figure out how to remove excessive algae from a popular pond in Des Moines.

City officials added aerators to the pond at Greenwood Park in an effort to help circulate the water. The state Department of Natural Resources awarded the city $300,000 to fix the problem.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports (http://bit.ly/11uW4Jj ) the pond, located near the city’s art center, continues to be covered by algae and duckweed.

Officials say fertilizer runoff from surrounding neighborhoods causes the problem.
