Shellsburg man gets prison for false tax returns

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — An eastern Iowa tax preparer has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to filing a fraudulent tax return.

The U.S. attorney’s office says U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade on Thursday sentenced 52-year-old Keith Rath, of Shellsburg, to 21 months in prison.

Rath pleaded guilty May 1 to aiding and assisting the preparation and filing of a false and fraudulent tax return.

In his plea agreement, he admitted filing a false tax return for a client that increased the refund. This was without the client’s knowledge.

Rath, who owned his own tax return preparation business, admitted filing other false returns between 2008 and 2010.

After his prison term is over, Rath must serve a year of supervised release. He also was ordered to make $52,418 in restitution.
