GARNER, Iowa (AP) — A retail fixture in the northern Iowa city of Garner is closing after 63 years.
Owner Marie Frederick told the Mason City Globe Gazette (http://bit.ly/17oPSl0 ) she’s closing The Goodnature Store because of high overhead costs and changes in how people shop for clothing today.
Frederick’s father Pete Goodnature opened the store in June 1950. He died in 1999 at age 80.
Frederick says it’s expensive to operate 15,000 square feet of retail space. The store also was hurt by changes in customer habits, as people now tend to buy from many stores, rather than at one spot.
Competition also has increased from big-box stores.
Frederick says the store could remain open as late as December. She’ll continue to operate three other specialty stores she owns in Clear Lake and Garner.
