Immigration reform forum planned in Ames

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin has invited his Democratic colleague Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois to Ames to host a forum on immigration reform.

The event, held on the eastern edge of Republican Congressman Steve King’s district on Friday, is in response to remarks King made earlier this month suggesting that many young unauthorized immigrants are drug runners.

Durbin, one of the authors of the Senate’s immigration reform bill, says King and others opposing reform should hear the stories of some of the immigrants and what they want to do with their lives.

The forum, to be held at Ames Middle School, will feature young immigrants, farmers, students and others discussing reform proposals.
