WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Black Hawk County has settled a lawsuit filed by the family of a jail inmate who killed himself in his cell in 2011.
The county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to pay $25,000 to the estate of 33-year-old Michael Adair.
Adair, who was being held at the Black Hawk County jail on a burglary charge, hanged himself in January 2011.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1449aKp ) the lawsuit claimed jail staff did not provide adequate care to address Adair’s mental health needs. The suit said staff knew Adair had a history of suicide attempts.
