IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Officials say Iowa City will move its downtown post office because of high rent.
The U.S. Postal Service said during a public meeting Wednesday that the city’s post office is paying too much for space it doesn’t need.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (http://icp-c.com/176f6FI ) that annual rent at the Iowa City Federal Building is $700,000.
Officials say they have not identified a new location yet, but they will probably lease a spot instead of build a new facility.
The Iowa City postmaster says operations for dozens of routes in nearby Coralville will move to that city’s post office.
